The key measurement to
a city’s success is how many people there are.

Accurate data is where we see huge value. We look at our pedestrian counts every day and we can start to really see trends over time.

Cities are all about people. And Auckland City Centre is under massive transformation and change.

There's a lot of transformation happening in Auckland City. Public and private sector investment, there's a lot of growth. There is a couple of hundred thousand people who live, work, and visit the area. That number of people in the city is a measurement of Auckland's success. How do we measure it? Pedestrian count systems. Having a Countculture pedestrian count systems in place in public spaces, is invaluable. The system helps us really understand where people are and how many people are here. Heart of the City is a city center business association here to ensure that we have a fabulous, successful city centre. When we set out on this journey, the city was under significant change and we really had clear driver to get more accurate data. We didn't want to rely on literally someone going out on the road and counting manually over a half an hour period.

The beautiful thing about this data is it's there forever. You don't need to remember to collect it. You can just go back in and it's already there.

The beautiful thing about this data is it's there forever. That's where we see the value. We look at our pedestrian counts every day and we can start to really see trends over time. We've made it really user-friendly and we've made it really accessible. And for people to benefit that and for business to be able to benefit from that, that's really important for us. That's something that we're also quite proud of in terms of how we're using this data and making it available for others. We look at pedestrian counts. We also look at spend, and when we can marry that data together, we have a really good, rich understanding of what's, along with other information, like perception surveys, what's actually happening in our city. There's a lot of people who are really keen and can see the value and the benefit of having the systems put in place like this.
